Effective JUNE 1, 2010, The Mid-Range Prone/F-Class match will be held through the summer as a $5 practice match the first weekend of the month.
The National Match Course moves to the SECOND SATURDAY of the month.
The Intermediate Training moves to the SECOND SUNDAY of the month. TEAM Matches are cancelled for the summer.
The 300 Meter Match will be held under the cover at 600 yards until October.
Unsupervised access to the High Power 600 yard range has been restricted to those club members who have demonstrated a proficiency at the use of long range rifles. This is due to a number of reasons but I feel with the encroachment of residences behind our berm, we must attain some accountability for the shooters that use this part of our club. Until a list was started July 1, 2007, we had no list of who was authorized to use the High Power Range.
Effective July 1, 2007, any club members desiring to shoot on the Highpower Range unsupervised will have to do the following:
- 1. Attend a required safety briefing. These are usually the second Saturday of the month but always check with the rifle director before attending.
- 2. Submit your name address, phone number, email, competitor number and classification to the Rifle Director.
- 3. Comply with the minimum qualification standards for unsupervised use of the 600 yard range. This includes demonstrating a proficiency at both 200 and 600 yards.
- 4. Once approved, display the High Power sticker on your Port Malabar name tag.
This will not effect any of the regularly scheduled competitions at the High Power Range. There is a Range Safety Officer present at all the organized matches who can make sure the safety rules are being adhered to. If you already have a Highpower competition classification, then the process can be streamlined.
The safety briefings are at the Intermediate Training held on the Sunday of the second full weekend of the month. I recommend you attend this match to learn the ropes of the use of our Highpower Range. The cost is only $5 and there are always experienced shooters there to help the new shooters. We do have spotting scopes and shooting mats for new shooters to use. You only need to bring a rifle suitable for long range use and ammunition.
The Port Malabar Rifle and Pistol Club High Power schedule is:
First Saturday & Sunday of the month (they must fall together) is the Mid Range Prone Match. You may shoot one or both days. The program is in the document section. The Match Chairman is Dennis Green and this match is run by several different Range Officers
The Sunday of the second full weekend of the month is the Intermediate Highpower training. Used as an introduction and training, we shoot a block time of 30 minutes at 200 yards. You may shoot any rifle and any position. Then we shoot several rapid fire strings usually starting with 2 + 2 and then 2 + 8 if you want to. Once all shooting is complete at 200 yards, I take the shooters that are interested and move them back to the 600 yard line for training. We usually shoot a 30 minute block time there. Fee is only $5. We only shoot two relays and are done by lunch time. This is a great time even for experienced shooters because they get a really good practice. Eric Kennard (Rifle Director) is the Match Chairman for this match.
The Third Saturday of the month is a John C. Garand Match. This match is run by Joe Hollenback. Although designed for antiques, any rifle is welcome.
The Sunday of the third weekend of the month (the day after the Garand) is the 300 meter match. This match is all prone. ISU targets can be used by shooters with iron sights. The scores maybe sent off to a postal league. Any sights use the MR63 300 yard target but at the 300 meter distance. We also have the MR63 F-Class target for this match. Fee for this is only $5. It also is only two relays. This match will be held at 600 yards under cover for the summer.
The week between Christmas and New Years is the Snowbird X-Miss Match. This is a four day 600 yard prone event. Please refer to the club calendar or contact the Rifle Director for dates.
The end of February to through the first week of March is the Orange Blossom Regional Match. Over these ten days are Midrange Prone events, Team events, XTC events, Antique Events, and XTC events. Full details are listed elsewhere on this site or check www.orangeblossomregional.com
